Gender and sexuality have a great impact on the self, one’s perception about sexuality has a lot to do with our gender and the cultural norms surrounding it. Men tend to be more sexually involved and open about it than women. Society says that it is okay for men to be sexually active and that doing so is cool. Women on the other hand are criticized and looked down upon when they are sexually active before marriage or at a young age. Cultural norms have a negative effect on the way women feel about their sexual identities and sex life. I will explore how women feel about norms and how it affects their sexuality, as well as how gender plays a role in this. The authors in Sex Rules: Emerging Adults’ Perceptions of Gender’s Impact on Sexuality, explain that one way to understand these differences in men’s and women’s sexual behavior is through the social norms that govern appropriate behavior for men and women. To do so we have to look at the sexual scripting theory, sexual scripts are rules that individuals develop through social and cultural norms about appropriate sexual behavior. When looking at this based on gender it is found that women’s sexual scripts are emphasized on relationship quality. Men’s sexual scripts emphasize individual pleasure. This again reflects stereotypes and social norms that surround each gender.
